Flash Flood Warning extends to central districts

April 20, 2024

The Flash Flood Warning issued for the northern districts of Barbados has been extended to the central districts.

A Flash Flood Warning is issued when rapid flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period (generally less than 6 hours) is occurring or is imminent in the warning area.

A Trough system has generated light wind speeds, strong daytime heating and adequate moisture in the atmosphere.

During the early afternoon excessive rainfall occurred in the northern districts, with more than an inch of rainfall recorded.

Subsequently, heavy rainfall has shifted southward across the central portion of the island.

The BMS has warned of the following possible impacts:

  • Runoff from higher elevations. Soil erosion/land slippage on exposed or scarred land surfaces.
  • Water settlements on roads and fields. Adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds etc.).
  • Large objects or debris from higher elevations becoming embedded within fast-moving water flows. Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads.
  • Delays on traffic routes with some roads being impassable or cut off in and out of minor towns.

The public is encouraged to monitor official sources for further updates.

This Flash Flood Warning was updated today at 3:40 p.m. and will be terminated at 6:00 p.m.
