Focus on heart disease in women this Heart Awareness Month

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados this month is working to raise awareness about women and heart disease.

February is Heart Awareness Month and Barbados is also a part of the ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign, which helps fund lifesaving women’s research, advances public health policy, and works to close the gender gap in research.

Cardiologist, Dr. Aderemi Soyombo says cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and strokes, is the leading cause of deaths worldwide, killing more women than all forms of cancer combined.

Despite this, she tells Mornin’ Barbados it remains under-recognised, under-diagnosed and under-treated.

Dr. Soyombo, who is a member of the Public Relations Committee of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, says there are various misconceptions and myths about heart disease in women.

Meanwhile, First Vice President and Board Member, Ena Harvey says month-long activities are planned to observe Heart Awareness Month.
