Ninety per cent of disabled people in Barbados are unemployed, and this is being seen primarily as a result of educational disadvantages for that section of the population.
Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Improving the Lives of People with Disabilities, Member of Parliament Edmund Hinkson, says the proposed National Policy Document on Creating a more inclusive society, will be addressing that imbalance.
That proposed bill will be finalised, debated and hopefully be activated this year.
Mr Hinkson was speaking last night on CBC TV 8’s The People’s Business, which dealt with issues facing the disabled community.
President of the Barbados Council for the Disabled, Kerryann Ifill, says there are other issues that need more focus.
This includes psychological and emotional abuse of the disabled.
Contributor to the draft bill, Professor Dwayne Devonish, added that the effort towards inclusivity needs to go beyond the law, and reach into the communities.
