Ahead of World Cancer Day on February 4, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has revealed the global cancer burden is growing, amidst mounting need for services.

In its latest estimates of the global burden of cancer, the IARC says prostate cancer is the number one prevelant cancer in Barbados followed by colorectal and breast cancer.

The information in its population factsheets show that in 2022, there were 1,120 new cancer cases along with 738 deaths.

Worldwide, there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths.

The top three cancers in men in Barbados have been identified as prostate, colorectal and lung cancer and in women, breast, colorectal and cervix uteri.
