High demand at AED

August 13, 2023

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) has responded following reports of long waits at its Accident and Emergency Department (AED).

Explaining that there has been a significant increase in non-urgent patients, the QEH urged people who “do not have life-threatening conditions to utilize the services of the Winston Scott Polyclinic.”

The full statement from the QEH follows:

“Over the last 48 hours, the Accident and Emergency Department has been extremely busy. Our medical team continues to respond to cases as they present to AED, with those who fall into categories one and two given priority. There has been a significant increase in category three patients which typically represents over 60 percent of the volume in AED. This has affected waiting times for non-urgent cases such as those who fall into categories four to five. We encourage people who have general complaints and do not have life-threatening conditions, to utilize the services of the Winston Scott Polyclinic, which remains a 24-hour operation.

“The QEH will not comment on specific cases due to patient confidentiality; however, we can report that those waiting have been assessed via our triage system, which prioritises categories of care. Priority must be given to cases considered critical and our medical team is working around the clock to address patients as they present to the department.

“We do apologise for any inconvenience during this relatively busy period in AED.”
