Barbados and other CARICOM countries are receiving much needed financial and technical assistance from Japan in tackling the ongoing deluge of sargassum seaweed that is impacting coastlines and tourism industries.
That’s according to Japan’s Deputy Director-General for Press and Public Diplomacy Yukiko Okano.
She made the revelation while updating members of the media on the inaugural visit to Barbados and other countries in the region, by Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Hayashi Yoshimasa.
She revealed that Minister Yoshimasa arrived in the island on May 1 and was hosted at a welcome dinner by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley and other cabinet officials. During that meeting Prime Minister Mottley expressed the hope that the two countries could further strengthen their bilateral relationship.
She adds that the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed the hope that the relationship could be deepened to collaborate on important issues and shared challenges such as climate change and global development financing.
The Japan Foreign Affairs Minister was slated to leave Barbados last evening to head to Peru to continue his visit to select countries in the Caribbean and Latin America.
