Justice Cumberbatch passes away

Justice of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Barbados Jefferson Cumberbatch is dead.

He passed away at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Justice Cumberbatch served as a Senior Lecturer in Law and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus before being appointed to the Supreme Court in January of 2020.

He also served as Chairman of the Fair Trading Commission and held the position of Chair of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority for almost 20 years.

In paying tribute Attorney General Dale Marshall said Barbados has lost one of its keenest legal minds.

He said as the mainstay of the Faculty of Law, Cave Hill Campus, Justice Cumberbatch had a hand in influencing generations of lawyers who passed through his many classes.

Mr. Marshall said he counts himself fortunate for having been his student while in the law faculty, and in later years work with him on various legal consultancies.

He said since the news of his death broke, he has received many messages from former students from all over the world expressing their deep sadness and more than a few of them were from colleague Attorneys General in the region.

Mr. Marshall said the field of law will be much the poorer for this untimely and devastating loss, and on behalf of the public bar and the Office of the Attorney General, extends deepest condolences to his family and friends.
