LGBT community reacts to High Court decision

December 14, 2022

The local LGBT community is celebrating the High Court’s decision to strike down laws that criminalise consensual same sex relations.

The decision, handed down by Madame Justice Michelle Weekes on Monday, means authorities can no longer prosecute people for buggery and serious indecency under the Sexual Offences Act.

Reacting to the news, Caribbean Campaign Lead at LGBT Open For Business, Donnya Piggott, said the move is a step towards progress and inclusion.

While acknowledging there are still people in society who are against LGBT issues, Piggott also believes there’s been a shift in thinking in recent years, and more Barbadians are becoming open minded.

Yesterday, Attorney General Dale Marshall, indicated Government will decide if it wants to appeal when it receives the written decision.

However, the LGBT advocate believes that would be an unfortunate step.
