The Barbados Environmental Conservation Trust (BECT) and Sandals Foundation donated $50,000 to help the Lodge School reduce its carbon footprint through sustainable agriculture.
Principal Robin Douglas shed some light on the ISOTOPE Intervention Project, an initiative started by a combined team of the Geography Department and the Agricultural Division of the Biology Department.
Mr. Douglas says one way to create a bright future for students is to engage them in practical aspects of harnessing and channelling solar energy into various daily uses.
Head of the Geography Department Krystal Marshall, says students got to safely observe a model solar panel system, as well as the full-sized solar panels being placed on the roof of the chicken coop to power the coop as well as the tool shed.
Resort Manager and Representative of Sandals Foundation Mr. Patrick Drake, says they are happy to support the Lodge School in augmenting education because it’s heartening to see the guava trees, soursop, cherries, Jamaican ackee, mulberry, passion fruit, bananas and more growing on the school grounds.
He added they are confident that the $50,000 donated through our partners at BECT is being put to good use and the future looks bright indeed.”
Dr. David Bynoe National Co-ordinator of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) of the UNDP, says this initiative at the Lodge School is emblematic of the type of practical sustainable agriculture models that students across Barbados should be exposed to in addressing the issue of food security and environmental sustainability.
