Meteor lights up skies across Barbados

September 13, 2023

Barbadians who were outside around twenty minutes after seven last night were fortunate to get a glimpse of a fiery spectacle in the sky.

President of the Astronomical Society David Marshall says it was a meteor, dismissing the notion of it being satellite material or even space junk.

A meteor is a streak of light caused as a meteoroid enters the earth’s atmosphere and heats up due to friction from the air.

The Astronomical Society President says he has also been bombarded with calls following the sighting of the phenomenon last night with some believing it to be a comet which is expected to be travelling through space around this period, called Nishimura.

He however notes Nishimura can’t be seen with the naked eye and would have to viewed with a telescope because of its distance.

This meteor was clearly seen with the naked eye at various vantage points around the eastern Caribbean, as far north as Dominica.
