“Fake news!”
Those were the words used by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office with Responsibility for Culture, Senator Dr Shantal Munro-Knight, in response to a post circulating on social media.
The post states that the government is working to replace the statue of Lord Nelson at National Heroes Square with a sculpture representing a family member of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.
The Senator stressed that the process to replace the statue of Lord Nelson is well on the way:
“The Division of Culture actually launched in May, as part of the Season of Emancipation, a design competition for a monument commemorating family. A press release had been issued. It was in the press. It was on social media.”
She adds that, “it is a multi-stakeholder committee, not only of government, including people from the artistic community that are making the decision in relation to the design”.
