National School Nutrition Policy rolled out

April 25, 2023

Today marks the roll out of the National School Nutrition Policy.

Acceptable snacks and beverages are those that contain between 130 and 240 milligrams of salt, no more than 25 grams of total sugars in snacks and no added sugars for beverages.

However, several parents were observed purchasing snacks no longer considered acceptable from nearby vendors, outside the Lawrence T Gay Memorial School.

CBC spoke with one vendor, who has been plying her trade near the school for over 30 years.

While she’s willing to comply with the policy the woman, who preferred not to give her name, says past efforts to offer healthier snacks for sale did not go well.

Chief Education Officer, Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw, is urging parents to work with the Ministry to ensure students consume healthier foods.

When asked about penalties for those who flout the policy, Ms. Archer-Bradshaw says those students who bring snacks and beverages considered unhealthy will be reminded of the policy by teachers.
