Barbados is on board with activities this year’s World Sight Day as renewed attention is placed on the importance of eye care.
Although this year’s theme is Love Your Eyes at Work, the Ophthalmology Department of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is shifting its focus to children.
Consultant Head Dr. David Callender says many are being presented too late with eye conditions.
Dr. Callender was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.
For this year’s celebration, the World Health Organization launched “Whoeyes”, a free app for the general public to check how well they can see things close up and at a distance and learn how they can protect their eye.
Dr. Callender says eye screening is critical.
He adds the school’s eye clinic based at the Winston Scott Polyclinic has been playing its part over the years assisted by teachers who refer students.
