Several Caribbean leaders, including Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, are in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines for talks between Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali and Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela regarding the long-standing border dispute.
The Barbados delegation includes Minister of Foreign Affairs Kerrie Symmonds and Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong.
The meeting which is being held under the auspices of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and CARICOM aims to ease tensions over Essequibo, a vast border region rich in oil and minerals that represents much of Guyana’s territory.
Earlier this month, Venezuela held a referendum which gave its authorities a mandate to exert governance over the region.
Guyana’s Ali has said his country will defend its sovereignty and its borders and that Venezuela should de-escalate its advances toward Guyana.
