Road tennis in the spotlight

The sport of road tennis will be in the spotlight in the weeks and months ahead with some big bucks up for grabs.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment is leading the way to to revive the indigenous sport with two major tournaments.

The first will be the National Road Tennis Independence Knockout Tournament slated for November 30th at venues across all 30 constituencies in Barbados.

30 adult male, 30 adult female and 30 junior champions, along with the second to fourth place winners will share a prize purse of over $100,000.

Constituency adult champions will receive $1000 each and junior champions will receive $150.

Registration opened today on the National Sports Council’s website, and all games are slated to start at 10:00 a.m.

The second tournament will be a National Championship, which will be held in early January next year.

It will carry a first prize of $20,000, while second will receive $15,000, third $10,000, fourth $5000 and the quarter finalists will each receive $2000.

The two-part initiative twins with Barbados’ efforts to take its indigenous sports to the world, with efforts on at the moment to promote road tennis in the Caribbean, Dubai, Panama, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.
