October 27, 2023

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Barbados for above normal swell heights.

A Small Craft Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 20 to 25 knots and/or sea swells of 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) are affecting or forecast to affect the marine area within the next 36 hours.

The Barbados Meteorological Services’ unmanned surface vessel to the southeast of Barbados recorded swell heights ranging from 2.0 to 2.5 metres (6 to 8 feet) throughout the day.

Current model guidance indicates that seas will deteriorate tomorrow, Saturday, October 28, 2023 with northerly swells ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 metres (8 to 10 feet) in open water. Small craft operators and sea bathers along western coastlines should also be aware of choppy seas.

Small craft operators should be prepared for the following possibilities:

-Large open water swells can be hazardous to some vessels.
-Operation of smaller vessels can be difficult at times due to large swells.

This alert will be terminated at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, 2023 or sooner if conditions warrant.
