Staff shortage in QEH Ophthalmology Dept

September 21, 2023

A shortage of junior doctors is hampering the operations of the Queen Elizabeth’s Hospital Ophthalmology Department.

The admission from Head of Department Dr. David Callender.

Dr. Callender was speaking to members of the media as the department received a donation of four slit lamps, valued at over a hundred thousand dollars.

Dr. Callender notes ophthalmology is the hospital’s busiest outpatient department, with in excess of 20 thousand patients being attended to each year and the number continues to climb.

He says staffing levels are impacting the department’s efforts to clear the backlog of eye surgeries which remains in the hundreds.

Currently about 60 surgeries are done a month, but it’s hoped that number can be increased.

Dr. Callender also provided possible reasons for the increasing number of patients, as he encouraged diabetics and people with hereditary glaucoma to get their eyes checked.
