Start of sugar harvest delayed

March 20, 2024

Two days after the scheduled start of this year’s sugar crop, canes are yet to start grinding at the Portvale Sugar Factory.

Chairman of the Barbados Energy and Sugar Company Limited, Lieutenant Colonel Trevor Browne told CBC News the canes will not start grinding until everything is in order.

He adds there are still some kinks to be ironed out, which are currently being worked on.

Meanwhile, sources close to the situation have told CBC the inspection of equipment including trucks and trailers is late, and truckers are now getting the relevant licences and permits in place to begin hauling the crop to the factory at Portvale, St. James.

While it is still unclear as to when the actual cutting of the canes will begin, the expectation among sugar farmers is that it wont start until next Monday.
