Barbados’ new National Grooming Policy for Schools is receiving praise for the stance it has taken on allowing natural black hairstyles.
Director of the Centre for Hybrid Studies, Dr. Deryck Murray, told Morning Report that for too long, wearing natural hair was discriminated against and the children have suffered.
He says while some may still have issues accepting it, the conversation will take place and all will be resolved.
Dr. Murray believes this is a start towards reversing the damaging legacies of colonisation, and reinforcing self esteem in black youth.
He adds that at the national level, once we can get our citizens to move against their negative self views, a better republic would be built.
