Updating guidelines for drills

October 13, 2023

Minister of Education Technological and Vocational Training Kay McConney has been commenting on the controversial simulation at the Springer Memorial School.

That exercise which caused some students to panic has led to outcry across some sections of society.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Future Forward Innovation Challenge for Schools at Pelican Village on the Harbour Road.

The Minister says she’s satisfied a number of stakeholders have spoken about the Springer Memorial matter to clarify the situation for the public.

However, she adds there is a need for guidelines to determine how drills are conducted in these modern times.

She told the media there’s an opportunity now for authorities to provide the right kind of guidance about how these exercises will be conducted in the future.

Minister McConney has also responded to opposition suggestions she and her Chief Education Officer should step down from their posts over the handling of the incident.

Ms. McConney says it’s a democracy and people are free to have their own opinions.
