As plans progress for a new geriatric hospital, upgrades are also on the cards for the island’s district hospitals.
The announcement from Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator Dr. Shantal Munro-Knight.
She was leading off Debate on a Resolution for the Compulsory Acquisition of Land at Waterford where the new hospital is being constructed.
Senator Dr. Munro-Knight says more funds have been allocated in the upcoming financial year for maintenance and repairs of geriatric hospitals.
However with a growing elderly population, she says Government recognises the geriatric hospital will not be able to fill demand.
As a result she says the state is planning to roll-out a more comprehensive community care programme.
