US $50 Million climate resilient wastewater project approved

Barbados has been able to secure major funding for a climate resilient wastewater project.

This through the Green Climate Fund (GCF), which has approved a US $50 million Funding proposal with US $39.3 million in grants.

The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), as a Regional Directed Access Entity of the GCF says it is pleased to have this second project approved for implementation and delivering benefits to the Government and people of Barbados.

The Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Climate Resilience Wastewater Systems in Barbados (3R-CReWS) project is aligned with the Barbados Roof to Ridge Programme and with the national priorities of Barbados.

The project is expected to help build the resilience of the water sector in Barbados by reusing, reducing, and recycling wastewater that will contribute to fostering food security, increasing productivity, and improving the health and well-being of Barbadians.

The CCCCC will commence the implementation of this transformative project in close partnership with the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) and the Government of Barbados. and the CCCCC notes the project’s success so far is testament to the excellent leadership of the Government of Barbados and the strong partnership, ownership, and support of the BWA and its personnel.

CCCCC Executive Director Dr. Colin Young notes they are also looking forward to replicating and scaling this project across other CARICOM Member States, with the support of the GCF.

He also thanked the GCF’s Board and Secretariat’s staff, the BWA and its technical team, and the CCCCC’s staff for ensuring that the project was approved at the 34th Meeting of the Board.
