Latin America, Caribbean a zone of peace

March 1, 2024

UN Secretary General António Guterres has hailed Latin America and the Caribbean as a place of peace, in a world where we see a proliferation of wars and conflicts of all kinds.

He was speaking yesterday during a press conference at the Argyle International Airport in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where hundreds of diplomats, including Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, are attending the 8th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

The meeting is expected to focus on food security, peace, climate change and health care.

Mr. Guterres was speaking on a day where over a hundred people queuing to receive humanitarian aid in Gaza were killed.

Secretary General Guterres says it’s time for a reform of international financial institutions, as he notes many small island developing states are being burdened by debt they were forced to take, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He’s also calling for more action to mitigate the impacts of climate change on small island developing states.
