St. Lucia: Man wanted by INTERPOL escapes police custody

June 17, 2023

CMC (St. Lucia) – A St. Lucian national, who had been arrested here and for whom the International Police (INTERPOL) has issued a “Red Notice” regarding his involvement in a murder in the French island of Martinique, has escaped police custody.

In a statement, the police said that a search warrant had been executed on the premises of Joharius Johannes alias Joe Grind and Junior Dorville on June 8 and although although the lawmen found nothing of evidential value, Johannes was detained on a report of assault with a firearm.

In addition, the statement said that INTERPOL had also issued a ‘Red Notice’ regarding him concerning a murder in Martinique.

The police said that Johannes, who had appeared in the First District Court, escaped lawful custody from the Babonneau Police Station, north of here on Wednesday after the court hearing.

In October 2020, murder accused, Orville Purnell, escaped from the Babonneau Police Station and fled to Jamaica.

Jamaica police recaptured Purnell, but he escaped again while awaiting extradition to St. Lucia.

Meantime, the police said that Johannes, “who is armed and dangerous” remains at large and are appealing for information from the public regarding his whereabouts.
