UPDATE: Weather system now a tropical depression

June 19, 2023

The tropical wave being closely monitored by the Barbados Meteorological Services was upgraded to tropical depression #3 at 11:00 a.m.

The centre of the system is located near 11N 40W with satellite imagery indicating the system has become better organized throughout the morning. Conditions will continue to improve for further development into a tropical storm in the coming days.

There is still some considerable uncertainty in model guidance on the forecast track with some of the guidance projecting the system can impact the Northern Windwards/Southern Leewards as early as Thursday. The system has been tracking slightly north of west at 20 mph over the past 24 hours and this general motion is expected to continue over the next few days.

Additionally, an area of disturbed weather is centred near 9N 27W. Disorganized showers associated with this area of interest in the far eastern Atlantic is closely being monitored by the BMS. Environmental conditions are expected to be marginally conducive for the slow development of this system later this week as the system tracks westward at 10 to 15mph.

While there are no watches or warnings in effect for Barbados, the public is urged to continue monitoring the updates from the BMS along with postings by GIS and DEM.

The next update will be at 5 p.m. today, Monday, June 19, 2023.
