Surfer Josh Burke has been slapped with a ban from all national duties for the rest of the year.

This, is after he and his father Alan Burke who was the coach of the national team, abruptly left the pan american surfing games in Panama, for the surfer to compete at another event in Australia.

Josh Burke, who was part of a five-member pan am national team that included Chelsea Tuach, Chelsea Roett, Che Allan and Kai St. George, abandoned the team and the event late last month to compete on the pro circuit, at the boost mobile gold coast pro.

Being an elite athlete with the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA), Burke was also sanctioned by that body. BOA president Sandra Osborne, told CBC Sports official correspondence was sent to the surfer with their sanctions, which were not revealed.

Josh will however still be able to continue competing on the pro circuit.

Speaking to CBC Sports on the matter, the president of the Barbados Surfing Association (BSA ), Paul Bourne, said his committee met last night to decide on the sanctions.

The BSA is to meet with Josh’s father, Allan Burke, before they decide on his sanctions for leaving the team and not fulfilling his duties as coach.
