‘Suki’ takes Scottish draughts title

September 29, 2023

Former world champion Ronald ‘Suki’ King is the 2023 Scottish Draughts Open Champion.

Playing in the final rounds this morning in Stonehaven, Scotland, King defeated home player Danny Oliphant in round nine before getting past Con Boyle of Ireland 2 games to nil in the final round of play.

King ended on 34 points, the same as fellow Barbadian Jack Francis but King won on honour points.

Francis would have beaten Ireland’s Frank Moran in round nine and Sean O’Driscoll in round ten to end the tournament on a high and in second position.

The other Barbadian Kent Layne ended fifth with 21 points.

He defeated Keith Foubister of Scotland in round nine and then drew with Moran in the final round.

This is the first time in the history of the 130 years of the Scottish Open that Barbados has had three players in the top five.
