Flash Flood Watch in effect for north western districts

September 8th, 2022

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for north western districts of Barbados.

This is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding within the watch area. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

In a release, the Barbados Meteorological Services says a light south-easterly wind regime, adequate moisture and daytime heating are generating localized activity across north-western districts of Barbados. Rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of rainfall are forecast, which could result in flooding in the watch area.

The public is urged to be on the lookout for the following possibilities:

  • Strong runoff from higher elevations
  • Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces
  • Debris such as small rocks, mud and tree foliage could end up on roads and property
  • Flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads
  • Traffic delays are also likely

This watch is in effect until 6:00 this evening, but will be terminated sooner if conditions warrant.
