CARICOM states considering new regional carrier

July 6th, 2022

Barbados’ Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, along with six of her Caribbean counterparts will be leading discussions on a new regional air carrier.

Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the matter of connectivity in the eastern Caribbean is urgent, even now as people travel more following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Only recently at the opening of the 43rd Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government, St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre told regional leaders the Caribbean needs LIAT or a better version of the carrier.

The other leaders onboard are the heads of Dominica, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia

Prime Minister Gonsalves acknowledges there are a number of private airlines operating in the Caribbean, but he explains these carriers have their own governance structure and CARICOM cannot dictate to them.

He outlined the action to be taken during the CARICOM press conference.
