Law enforcement officials meet over Thomas matter

May 3, 2023

Local law enforcement officials remain tightlipped tonight after a High Court Judge in Trinidad described as an abduction, the detention and subsequent repatriation of a Trinidadian, by police in Barbados.

While delivering his scathing judgement, Justice Devindra Rampersad also dismissed the criminal proceedings brought against Brent Thomas, a firearms dealer.

The Judge’s assessment of what happened in Barbados to Thomas has prompted Attorney General Dale Marshall to call on Police Commissioner Richard Boyce to investigate the matter.

CBC understands a high level meeting involving Commissioner Boyce is currently underway, regarding this issue.

Reports suggest Thomas was first arrested on September 29, 2022, and later released.

He was re-arrested while in Barbados on his way to Miami for medical treatment.

Thomas was returned to Trinidad and Tobago, where he was later charged with possession of a series of weapons, including grenades and rifles.

Over the weekend, Trinidad and Tobago Opposition legislator, Dr. Roodal Moonilal, said the Barbados Government had questions to answer, regarding the findings of the High Court Judge about the manner in which Thomas was detained and returned to the twin-island republic.
