Jamaica: Barbadian fined for drug charges

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – A Barbadian national has been ordered to pay forthwith a total of J$600,000 after he was found guilty of possession of cocaine and attempting to export cocaine.

Kelvin Charles, 40 had been convicted last Friday on charges of attempting to smuggle over 1.8 kilograms of cocaine into the United Kingdom through the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James.

Charles, a carpenter, was arrested on October 26, after Customs officers allegedly discovered the illicit drug concealed in false compartments of his luggage during security screening procedures.

He was subsequently charged with possession of cocaine, dealing in cocaine, and attempting to export cocaine.

When he appeared in the St James Parish Court,  Charles pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined J$200,000 or six months imprisonment for the possession of cocaine and J$400,000 for attempting to export cocaine with a mandatory imprisonement of six months.

Charles was ordered to pay the fines immediately or would serve a total of 18 months in jail.
