American Airlines will not serve alcohol in main cabins of flights until 2022

American Airlines has announced it will not serve alcohol in the main cabin of its flights until January 18th, 2022.

The date corresponds with the expected expiration of the US mask mandate on public transportation.

In a memo to employees earlier today, the airline said it was doing all it can to help create a safe environment for crew and customers onboard the aircraft.

American Airlines suspended alcohol service in the main cabin of its flights earlier this summer, with a plan to resume on September 13th when the transportation mask mandate was originally set to expire.

The airline says it is also “gaining ground” in helping curb to-go alcohol sales in airports, part of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) crackdown on unruly airline passengers.

The FAA today proposed more than $500,000 in new fines against unruly airline passengers that they say refused to wear masks, hit flight attendants and even threw luggage across the cabin.

Earlier this week, the FAA noted that based on 3,900 reports of incidents, it has opened 682 investigations into possible violations of federal laws.

Many airlines first suspended alcohol sales in early 2020 to minimize interaction between crew and passengers and to ensure safer flights.
