Criminologist: Nature of crime changing

August 5, 2023

A local criminologist is warning that the nature of crime in Barbados and the Caribbean is changing.

Director of the Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit, Cheryl Willoughby, was making a presentation during a discussion on crime and violence hosted by the Mount of Praise Wesleyan Holiness Church.

Ms. Willoughby shared murder statistics for several countries in the region, including Barbados which has recorded 30 so far this year compared to 43 for 2022, most of which were committed using firearms.

According to Ms. Willoughby, research suggests in 2010 Barbados had 150 gangs with approximately 4000 members.

She’s also made a startling revelation about the role of women in these gangs.
