Fight continues to tackle sargassum

May 17, 2023

Government will not be deviating from its 10 year old method of manually removing the mounds of sargassum seaweed from beaches across the island.

Environment Minister Adrian Forde gave the assurance earlier today, during a press conference at his Ministry’s Warrens offices.

As it stands, teams from the National Conservation Commission and the Barbados Youth Advance Corps will continue to assist in cleanups as it is a tried, tested and proven method.

Once collected, the seaweed will be bagged and transported to an area in St. John, selected because of its non-porous soil composition, which prevents seepage into the water supply.

Minister Forde adds the stance will aid in protecting the marine biodiversity particularly the crabs and turtles.
