Gas leak in city resolved

January 3, 2023

A work crew from the National Petroleum Corporation (NPC) has been able to fully resolve the gas leak issue that resulted in a temporary cordon of the Tudor Street and Swan Street junction yesterday.

In giving an update on the situation, Acting General Manager Ian Bradshaw says a team from the corporation returned to the area just before 10 this morning to conduct a further leak detection survey.

The portable methane detector, which measures the level of natural gas present in the area, was utilised once more and it was confirmed by the NPC team that no methane (natural gas odorant) was detected.

Officers of the corporation also liaised with several members of the business community regarding the original complaint, and feedback was received that the natural gas scent was no longer present.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bradshaw also revealed that generally there are ongoing pipeline replacement works to replace aged infrastructure.

He said the natural gas mains replacement project is ongoing and is designed to replace aged infrastructure – cast iron pipeline, along Highway 7, My Lord’s Hill and Bridgetown.

As a result, he says they are sensitising the public to the possibility of experiencing suspected gas leaks and strong scents of gas.
