NUPW elections underway

The election of the National Union of Public Workers’ new executive committee is underway today with two parties in the run off after the withdrawal of current President Akanni McDowall.

Team New Guard led by Kimberley Agard has put up Charles Bostic for 1st Vice President, John Parris for 2nd Vice President, O’Brien Smith, 3rd Vice President and Pamela Humphrey and Roy Greenidge for General Treasurer and Deputy General Treasurer respectively.

The other Team Vision Workers Interest Now is led by Fabian Jones, with Daria Cave for 1st Vice President, David Denny for 2nd and McLita Knight for 3rd Vice President.

Around 6000 people are eligible to vote.

Acting General Secretary Wayne Walrond told CBC News there are 13 centres and most polls close at 4:00 p.m., while the NUPW closes at 6:00 p.m.

He added that the process was going well and they wanted to get the results finished before the curfew.

Mr. Walrond says all COVID-19 protocols are being observed.
