Reparations movement influencing others

April 20, 2023

A Barbadian diplomat says the push for reparations is driving other areas of activism and diplomacy.

That is the view of Ambassador to CARICOM, David Comissiong who says countries are moving beyond just the narrow perimeters of the reparations campaign for African enslavement.

His comments come at the start of a historic conference in the US examining the conditions of black people in America and globally.

The five-day State of the Black World Conference in Maryland is organised around the theme “Global Africans Rising, Empowerment Reparations and Healing”.

Heads of State from Africa and the Caribbean, including Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, are slated to attend.

Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles says the reparation movement across the world is no longer ad-hoc as movements are interconnected.
