Security intervention needed

February 3, 2023

Barbados’ Ambassador to the Organisation of American States Noel Lynch has told the organisation a security intervention is needed in Haiti.

He cautioned the grouping about long rhetoric and talk, stressing the situation has to be addressed before elections there.

Speaking during a Regular Meeting of the Permanent Council, he said Haiti should not be ignored before echoing the popular phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’.

Ambassador Lynch has welcomed recent comments from Jamaica whose Prime Minister Andrew Holness has expressed his country’s willingness to take part in a military intervention in Haiti.

He pressed the OAS to set up a standing body and committee to monitor the situation in Port-au-Prince and to commit to a hemispheric force to assist the Haitian police.

He says the widespread gang movement has the potential to spread and affect other countries.
