An almost steady flow of viral videos and photos of accidents on this island’s roads is prompting a word of concern and caution from local insurance executives.
Chief executive officer of Cooperators General Insurance and immediate past director of the General Insurance Association of Barbados (GIAB), Anton Lovell, says there is growing concern about the patience of some drivers, as well as the speed at which some people are travelling, resulting in sometimes serious accidents.
Speaking with CBC News, he says a lack of patience has been observed as a contributing factor in some cases.
He also believes it will be necessary for the insurance industry to work more closely with the Road Safety Association to do more education on good driving habits for drivers and other road users.
Mr Lovell adds that another key factor relates to distracted driving, as many drivers are getting into accidents while using their mobile devices.
He says the number of people still using their phones while driving is a major concern, especially since it has been against the law for several years.
