Bermuda bracing for weekend rains

September 1, 2023

CMC – Bermudians were bracing for inclement weather this weekend as a tropical storm warning went into effect for the British Overseas Territory as post-tropical cyclone, Idalia, moves into the area.

In addition, Bermuda is on Friday dealing with the passage of Tropical Storm Jose and Tropical Depression Gert as the once powerful category 4 Hurricane Franklin is losing tropical characteristics and is expected to become an extra-tropical cyclone by tonight.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Jose is expected to be absorbed by Franklin on Friday night or early Saturday. It has maximum sustained winds of near 50 miles per hour (mph) with higher gusts and the NHC said little change in strength is forecast.

The Bermuda Weather Service (BWS) said that a tropical storm warning is now in effect for Bermuda as Idalia is expected to strengthen.

“We have higher confidence in our local conditions over the weekend with Idalia being more of a rain than wind event. We could experience localised flooding from heavier showers as Idalia passes,” the BWS said in its latest bulletin.

“Idalia is expected to become a tropical cyclone again in the next 24 to 36 hours or so and we can expect occasional tropical storm force winds to begin on Saturday,” it added.

“Heavier showers can start as early as tonight. Plan accordingly and stay safe,” the BWS said, noting that Idalia’s closest point of approach to Bermuda will be at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow when it will be about 90 miles away.
