CRFM working to protect fisheries and aquaculture sectors

September 9, 2023

The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism is working to protect the fisheries and aquaculture sectors of Barbados and the region from the growing negative impacts of abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear, or ghost gear.

To address this problem, the Belize-based CRFM signed a memorandum of understanding with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative.

The MOU satisfies a mandate from CARICOM Ministers responsible for fisheries and aquaculture, who passed a resolution on the prevention of ghost gear in CRFM member states, when they met in April this year.

CRFM Executive Director, Milton Haughton says the partnership will ensure the vast wealth lying beneath the Caribbean Sea yields optimal benefits for present and future generations.

Associate Director of the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, Joel Baziuk says they have already been working with several countries since 2019 and are looking forward to working with the CRFM more formally to tackle ghost gear throughout the region.
