Swimmers meet CARIFTA requirements

A number of swimmers cemented their place on the CARIFTA team by meeting the standard required on the final day of the BASA Long Course National Championships at the Aquatic Centre.

Eight swimmers achieved ‘A’ qualifying standards – in the girls 13-14 800 metre freestyle Heidi Stoute and Isabella Mayers swam 9 mins, 29.64secs and 9mins, 57.72 respectively to surpass the 10 min, 10.48 sec required standard.

Stoute also had an ‘A’ qualifying time when she won the 50 metres free in a time of 27.43secs.

Jaiya Simmons also qualified in that event with a time of 27.46 secs, and she too was also in CARIFTA standards in the 13-14 girls 200-metre backstroke with a 2 min, 33.20-sec clocking.

Also qualifying in two events was Aaliyah Greaves in the girls’ 11-12 200-metre backstroke, with a winning swim of 2 mins, 48.81 secs and in the 50-metre freestyle with 29.43 secs.

Kaija Eastmond also met the ‘A’ standard in that event when she was second in 29.59 secs.

The other girl making the CARIFTA standard on the final day was Saniya Minnis in the 11-12 girls 100-metre breaststroke with a time of one minute, 23.62 secs.

In the boys Michael Sobers met the standard for the 11-12 200 metre backstroke with a time of 2mins, 36.12secs and Joshua Ross with a time of one minute, 08.07secs qualified in the boys 15-17 100 metre breaststroke.

The CARIFTA Swiming Championship 2024 is scheduled for March 28 to April 7 in The Bahamas.
