Barbados has been affected by the global rise in autism.
According to Minister of Education Kay McConney, education officials are reporting an increase in the number of children diagnosed with the condition or autism-like characteristics.
She updated the Lower House on the findings over the last three years on those referred from public schools.
Around 120 children have been referred.
Ms. McConney was contributing to Debate on a Resolution to lease property to the Autism Association of Barbados.
She wants parents of children with autism and the Autism Association of Barbados to partner with her Ministry to help people better understand the disorder.
The Education Minister admits students with special educational needs are underserved by the island’s education system.
She says Government is working to address this through its education transformation agenda.
