Call for Child Protection Bill to be revised

September 20, 2023

Declaring the proposed Child Protection Bill is unacceptable in its present form, a sociologist has called for it to be revised.

Dr. Veronica Evelyn, in dissecting the Bill before a Joint Select Committee, queried if it was homegrown or influenced from international partners.

She expressed her displeasure with the lack of clarity, telling the committee, which included the Minister of People Empowerment Kirk Humphrey, the language of the Bill is worrisome.

To support her point, she highlighted court cases in other jurisdictions.

Meanwhile, Acting Chief Parliamentary Counsel Shawn Belle doesn’t subscribe to the notion the Child Protection Bill is not child-focused.

In his contribution, Independent Senator Dr. Chelston Brathwaite says he’s convinced while the Bill takes into consideration international context and obligations, it is focused on seeking to do the best for the people and children of Barbados.
