Early detection, treatment key for glaucoma

March 14, 2024

Given the high prevalence of glaucoma in Barbados, ophthalmologists continue to stress the importance of early detection and treatment.

People who sustained minor injuries to the eye are also deemed at risk later in life.

Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Dawn Grosvenor says glaucoma is a tricky disease, calling it the silent thief of sight.

She says in the early stages, it produces no signs or symptoms.

Dr. Grosvenor was a guest on CBC TV8’s Mornin’ Barbados.

Focus continues to be placed on the disease this World Glaucoma Week through a range of activities.

Barbadians are encouraged to wear green on Friday to show their support for the ‘Go Green For Glaucoma’ campaign.
