Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Elizabeth Thompson, suggests there may be fewer incidences of elder abandonment if caretakers received more support from private and public agencies.
During Debate in the Upper House, she voiced the belief that people may not want to abandon their elderly relatives, but lack the facilities and structures to care for them.
Senator Thompson is also encouraging entrepreneurs to consider constructing a one stop shop where the elderly can access all aspects of their care.
